Which Crematoria is best in Sheffield?

City Road Crematorium & Cemetery, Sheffield

City Road Crematorium & Cemetery, Sheffield

Sheffield has three crematoria. City Road and Hutcliffe Wood both owned and run by Sheffield City Council and Grenoside Crematorium, owned and run by Dignity Funerals under the trading name of “Crematorium & Memorials Group”.

City Road Cemetery & Crematorium is the oldest of Sheffield City Council’s two crematoria. The chapel & offices are majestic and have enviable views across the city towards the Peaks. The chapel has a very traditional feel though as a Funeral Celebrant it has all the modern facilities that make it an efficient & pleasant location for officiants & mourners alike. Despite being so near to the City Centre, parking is easy and free as the cemetery access roads are rarely very busy. This is probably the best crematoria to access via public transport as buses are frequent on City Road in and out of town.

Whilst City Road has two chapels, in recent years only the original is ever used. Sadly, when things get busy, the City Council’s policy is to reduce service times rather than to use their “new” chapel.

Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium is Sheffield City Council’s newer crematorium and serves many communities in the South of Sheffield. It has one large chapel and beautiful grounds & is a very peaceful setting for a funeral service. Parking is accessible from Archer Road, Fraser Road onto Periwood Lane. Alternatively, if you don’t mind a short walk, from Abbey Lane onto Hutcliffe Wood Road. I prefer the top car park, especially in the spring when these beautiful crocuses welcome you.

Grenoside Crematorium & Memorial Gardens have beautiful & peaceful grounds on the edge of the North of the City. With two chapels (North Chapel doing services on the hour and South Chapel doing services on the half-hour), it is a busy & popular location in a modern setting. Parking is plentiful and easy. Whilst it is owned and run by Dignity Funerals (one of the UK’s largest Funeral Directors) it is used by all funeral directors in the City.

Most people choose the Crematoria based on where they live and the ease of getting mourners to the funeral service. However, if you live equidistance from two or all three, then it is purely down to personal preference.
