Why White Lilies at a Funeral?

White lilies are probably the most associated flower with funerals. Ever wondered why?

Evidence suggests white lilies have been a favoured flower at funerals since Ancient Greek & Roman times. They are representative of peace, purity & innocence. The way lilies die annually & then sprout new stems for the summer makes them highly symbolic of a soul being reborn. Their delicate scent would also make them a popular choice historically. Today, white lilies might be interspersed with other white flowers like white carnations, tulips, roses or chrysanthemums.

Alternatively, pink stargazer lilies are also popular. These days, many families request “no flowers” from mourners & request charitable donations instead. However, a spray of white lilies is still very popular to be displayed on the coffin until the point of committal.
