Wedding Under An Ash Tree

If the recent sunny days has inspired you to consider an outside wedding, there is no where more precious & enchanting than a wedding under an Ash Tree.

Ash trees are magnificent trees which have a great mystical tradition & cultural importance in many aspects of human life.

The ash tree is often described as the “Tree of Life” because in many ancient cultures it was believed to be the basis of humanity. It’s roots are very strong & well attached to the soil; ancient Druids believed the ash joined the realms of past, present & future; the Vikings believed the branches of the ash (which are often struck by lightning) touched the gods whilst its roots reached as far as the underworld.

Ash trees were considered of great importance to human health. It has been used historically in the making of diuretics, laxatives & tonics. A teaspoon of ash sap was a popular remedy for newborn babies and it was often thought to cure warts, rickets & ailing children. The ash tree was also used to indicate healthy living & survival.

The ancient Britons & Celts believed the ash had magical powers & it is one of the 5 sacred trees. It was used to protect people from evil spirits & to make magical wands, staffs & broomsticks. Vikings & Anglo-Saxons used ash for spears & shields.

Sadly, ash dieback, a fungal disease, has been killing many native wild ash trees in Britain since 2012. In order to control this epidemic which has already had a devastating impact in South East of England, aggressive management of existing ash trees is being used to prevent a forecasted 80% loss of native British ash trees at a cost of £15 billion.

As the ash tree is supposed to represent Mother Earth, it’s recent struggles as a species has ironic parallels to human health in 2020/21. So what would be more supportive & symbolic than choosing to plant a new ash tree at your wedding or at the birth of a child.
