Wedding under an Oak Tree

Wedding under oak.png

In many cultures a wedding under an oak tree foretells strength & durability in the marriage & the couple will be blessed with wisdom.

The mighty oak tree is probably the most venerated tree worldwide & throughout the ages.

Ancient British Druids held ceremonies in oak groves long before the arrival of Christianity which also revered the the tallest & strongest of trees, whose timber was used to build adventurous ships & churches.

Mistletoe, long valued as a symbol of fertility & love, is predominantly found growing in oak trees which can live for up to 1,000 years.

The oak tree is a keystone species in a wide range of habitats supporting more biodiversity than any other tree. One mature oak will support approximately 2,300 other species from the most obvious birds, mammals & insects to the less obvious fungi, essential bacteria & other micro-organisms which are still vital in the food chain.

Probably the most famous oak tree in the UK is Major Oak in Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire. It is between 800-1000 years old & folklore says it was used as a hideout for Robin Hood.

Gog & Magog, two oak trees in Glastonbury, Somerset, are said to be the remnants of a Druid oak causeway (the oaks of Avalon). They are named after the last male & female giants who were said to have roamed ancient Britain.

When we feel a strong & passionate love for someone, it’s not surprising that writers & poets often compare love to the branching of an oak tree. All big things start as tiny elements, just as all mighty oaks start from a small acorn.

As the name of Acorn2oak Ceremonies implies - our love & life cycle is much like that of the oak tree. I am proud of its name & the associations it brings.
