What is a Tree Planting Ceremony?
A tree planting ceremony at a wedding is reported to date back to many ancient civilisations, though today it perhaps more popular for other reasons to eco-conscious couples.
Like many unity ceremonies, tree planting is performed as a symbol of a couple coming together in their new union. Individually, they bring their own soil and together plant a sapling. It represents how lasting and sustainable relationships, that grow strong roots and branches to weather all storms, require love, nurturing and attention to grow.
The ceremony can also be performed with the help of others, perhaps the couple have children to contribute some soil, or friends and family who also vow to water and support the sapling as it grows.
If the wedding is outdoors, even in a woodland or a beautiful garden under a mature tree, a tree planting ceremony can form part of a wonderful theme. Saplings could also be given as wedding favours or form part of the table decorations at the reception.
According to many different ancient cultures, different trees are associated with various meanings & significance. A myrtle tree is supposed to bring love and joy, whereas a wild apple brings health and happiness. A cherry tree brings good fortune, the willow fertility and the oak brings courage and wisdom.
